Hey everyone, I’ve just started a new job and haven’t been giving AT the time it deserves. We’ll take a break with the compos for a bit while considering what to do next at Audio Tournament.

that’s pretty understandable 🙂 any ideas for the next one?
We’ll see. I think we need to reevaluate the goals of Audio Tournament.
Right now it just seems to be the migration point for SDCompo, but although there is the potential for a lot of side by side compos (see http://battleofthebits.org) I don’t think we necessarily want to manage something that big and crazy looking… unless we do?
Hey @chunter, thanks for your input. I do want to grow the participation but at the moment it seems to participation has been declining. That’s due to my negligence in promoting and developing the site. Also perhaps people / the scene is not what it once was? And last but not least the online tracking compo format may be stale and need some fresh ideas to make it more fun / interesting.
That said I still love the tracks everyone submits. Even with small participation the tracks you guys submit are amazing. So really I just want there to be a more thriving community for you guys.
I’ve talked about not being completely satisfied with the site design and wanting to improve a lot of the functionality. That takes a lot of time and effort whether by 1 person or more.
It’s up to you, but I suggest listing all the tasks needed, and maybe we can find a way to divide them up. You might imagine I’m nervous to volunteer myself too much, but maybe if enough people want to help it won’t be so hard on everyone involved.
Random fluctuations make it tough to point to anything in particular, but if it were me I’d focus on keeping a consistent schedule. Announce the next round right as the voting of the current one is ending.
If the schedule is inconsistent, I don’t expect very many people to remember to check the site every day to check if a new round has been announced. You might want to send out emails or give people other ways to see new round announcements like on the Renoise forum.
We have email subscriptions and blasts when compos begin already.
Agreed regular reliable schedules is something we haven’t been maintaining. @Chunter, the email system hasn’t been working properly for awhile. One of the things that needs fixing.
Even with that basic feature working though, we’ve been doing random VST and sample pack rounds for awhile. I’m wondering if that format is kind of stale or what would make participating more interesting / exciting than just grabbing sample packs each month.
To me, that takes us to theme rounds, open rounds, and genre rounds. Just because the entry count went down for some of those in the past doesn’t mean it will now.
Other possibilities are running such rounds as a different compo, since we can, as long as that doesn’t create too much work.
Yeah those are good variations on the sample pack style. I appreciate your optimism and I do think there would be more participation if email notifications worked better and I put more effort into marketing. That said the format of sample pack tracking every month seems like we’ve done it so many times. Maybe the question is what would make writing music and sharing project files online more engaging?
I don’t want to go blasting on forums asking about interest until after the weekend, and it’s going to seem like sacrilege, but what would you think about having other DAWs?
I know that I wouldn’t buy the licenses to judge project files for FL Studio or Live, so I don’t necessarily recommend making SounDevotion into an anything goes compo because people wouldn’t look at the projects, but there could be a Live compo, Mixcraft compo, etc may be able to exist individually and run concurrently.
i’m new to all this but how about have a turn always start (or end) at the first day (or last day) of a month? it’s kind of retro i guess xD
@Chunter, other daws are definitely a good idea to expand. I haven’t started on that yet since the site first needs a redesign. Definitely wouldn’t expect people to buy additional DAWs.
@mats, I usually try to schedule them ending on a Saturday night, so most time zones can use at least part of the weekend to finish and submit. 🙂
