Are there some conventions to know about pads and other samples with more than one note?
For example, is the root note usually tuned to C? Is the chord usually major or minor?
I don’t know how those are addressed from a theory standpoint. Other than that, I would say does it pass the ear test within your mix/composition? 🙂
Also, although this is old and slow-paced, I enjoyed this series on synthesis. Even learned or remembered a thing or two.
One of the relevant points to your question regarding instruments with multi-notes is that a lot of our instruments have more than one frequency or note that they are comprised of. Yes, just some of these pads and other crazy sounds have them even more pronounced.
I don’t know if being reminded that make this more clear? I guess the root is whichever note is loudest. Major or minor? I don’t know it is not a 5th, it is possible to use either IMO depending on the rest of the accompanying composition/mix since a lot of those kind of instruments are used for layer and texture.
